Unlike the small wearable ghau amulets most collectors encounter, this substantial example was created for home display, making it a striking focal point for a Buddhist altar, meditation space, or collection of Himalayan religious art.

Crafted from molded plastic in a rich oxblood-red finish, the shrine features an ornate arched surround bordered by flame-like rays symbolizing enlightenment. At its center sits a beautifully modeled crowned Buddha in meditation beneath a traditional circular Shou longevity symbol, while elegant scrolling floral motifs enrich the surrounding field and decorative detailing continues around the base. The hinged lower compartment opens to reveal three interior storage sections intended for prayers, relics, mantras, or other sacred keepsakes, while the rear retains its original backing panel.

This shrine measures approximately 8 inches tall, 6½ inches wide, and 4⅞ inches deep. The molded decoration remains crisp throughout, giving the piece exceptional visual presence despite its lightweight construction.

Acquired from my late uncle's collection, this shrine appears to date to the mid-20th century. While traditional Tibetan ghau shrines were often crafted from copper, brass, or silver, molded plastic examples such as this provided a more affordable alternative for household devotional use while preserving the symbolic imagery and spiritual purpose of the traditional form.

Condition is very good vintage condition with light surface wear, minor scuffs, and age-related handling consistent with careful ownership. The hinged compartment opens and closes properly, and the original rear panel remains intact. One of the two small molded interior stop tabs near the lower hinge area has broken away, allowing the front panel to open slightly farther on that side. The hinge itself remains intact and fully functional, and the missing stop does not affect display or normal use. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
