Vintage Sascha Brastoff Rooftops Amoeba Bowl Signed Sascha B Mid Century California Art Pottery Freeform Dish

A wonderfully evocative example of Sascha Brastoff's celebrated Rooftops series, this vintage mid-century California art pottery bowl features a stylized village of angular houses, trees, distant mountains and a tall church steeple rendered in the unmistakable graphic language of 1950s modern design. Muted blue-gray, taupe, brown and warm golden accents stand against the softly shaded gray ground, with small openings in the buildings picked out in brighter color. The asymmetrical freeform shape rises into gently swept points at the sides, giving the shallow bowl a distinctly sculptural profile.

The interior decoration is signed “SASCHA B,” while the underside bears the Sascha Brastoff rooster factory mark with California identification and the number 12. The Sascha B signature is associated with Brastoff designs produced either by Brastoff himself or by decorators working under his supervision, making it more accurate to describe this as a signed Brastoff design rather than claim that Brastoff personally painted the piece. His Los Angeles pottery became an important part of postwar California design, producing ceramics that combined fine-art influences with the adventurous forms and decoration of the mid-century period.

Measuring approximately 7 inches wide by 5½ inches, this compact footed bowl works beautifully as a decorative display piece, trinket or jewelry dish, or collectible vintage ashtray form.
