Vintage Russel Wright Iroquois Casual China Charcoal Divided Covered Vegetable Bowl 1950s Mid Century Modern

An iconic piece of American Mid Century Modern design, this vintage Russel Wright Casual China divided vegetable bowl with its original sculptural lid was produced by Iroquois China Company of Syracuse, New York. Wright designed Casual China in 1946, bringing his characteristic organic forms and modern approach to everyday living into a durable vitreous china dinnerware line. This exact divided serving form and lid are represented in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, making it an especially recognizable example of Wright's influential postwar tableware design.

Finished in the sophisticated Charcoal colorway, this large round serving dish combines a low, flowing profile with two divided interior compartments and a beautifully sculpted lid whose recessed center and organic raised handle are unmistakably Russel Wright. Casual Charcoal is documented as having been produced from 1954 to 1964, placing this example firmly within the classic Mid Century Modern period. Replacements specifically catalogs the Charcoal version of this form as a “Divided Rd Covered Vegetable Bowl.” Beyond its original use for serving vegetables and side dishes, its substantial proportions make it equally appealing as a covered casserole or divided serving dish for a modern table.

The bowl measures approximately 10 inches in diameter and 2¼ inches tall without the lid, standing approximately 2¾ inches tall with the lid in place. Factory firing/support marks are visible, as expected from manufacture. A scratch-like line is present on the exterior, along with minor vintage surface evidence visible in the photographs; neither detracts significantly from the strong overall presentation of this complete two-piece serving set.
