Vintage Homer Laughlin Harlequin Maroon Luncheon Plate 9.25 Inch Original HLC Pottery

A striking example of original Homer Laughlin Harlequin dinnerware, this 9¼-inch luncheon plate features the rich reddish Maroon glaze used during the early production years of the popular Harlequin line. Introduced in 1938 as a colorful companion to Homer Laughlin's celebrated Fiesta ware, Harlequin was created for sale through F. W. Woolworth and became a distinctive part of American Depression-era and Machine Age tableware. The streamlined form, broad rim and concentric rings give the plate the clean geometric character prized by collectors of vintage Homer Laughlin, Harlequin, Fiesta-era pottery and Art Deco American dinnerware.

The glaze is the collector-designated Harlequin Maroon, an original red-family color that can appear brick red, reddish orange or muted salmon depending upon lighting. It should not be confused with the brighter Coral glaze used for the later Harlequin revival. Measuring approximately 9¼ inches in diameter, this is the original Harlequin luncheon plate form. The underside is unmarked, consistent with many pieces of original Harlequin production.

The face presents extremely well with an attractive, even glaze. No chips or cracks were observed on the face. On the underside near the foot is one small irregular area where the glaze is absent; I cannot determine with certainty whether this is a manufacturing spur/contact mark or a small chip, so it is shown closely in the photographs rather than characterized more definitively.
