Vintage Emil Cahoy Pottery Tea Set Marbled Swirl Teapot Cups Saucer Colome South Dakota Studio Pottery

Distinctive swirling clay, warm rust-red and cream coloring, and handmade character identify this partial tea service as the work of South Dakota potter Emil Cahoy of Colome. The five-piece group includes a lidded teapot, three cups and one saucer, all sharing Cahoy’s striking marbled or swirl pottery treatment. The teapot is the centerpiece, with a sculptural flower in relief on the body, a modeled floral lid and gracefully curved handle and spout. With the lid in place, the teapot measures approximately 6¼ inches tall.

Cahoy pottery has particular appeal to collectors of American studio pottery, regional South Dakota pottery, handmade folk pottery and unusual marbled ceramics. Rather than relying on decoration applied over a plain body, the swirling rust, terracotta and cream coloration runs through the clay itself, giving each component its own individual pattern. The teapot, all three cups and the saucer are individually signed “E. Cahoy, Colome SD”; only the fitted teapot lid is unsigned. Keeping the surviving pieces together preserves an appealing example of Cahoy’s coordinated tableware rather than separating the service into individual pieces.

The teapot and fitted lid are in very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks found. Two cups are also free of chips and cracks. One cup has a small chip along the rim. The saucer has a shallow sliced chip extending along the edge and onto the face; because the exposed clay continues to display the characteristic marbled coloration, the loss blends surprisingly well visually, although it can be felt.
