Vintage 1958–1960s Franciscan Starburst Coupe Cereal Bowl Atomic MCM Dinnerware

An icon of American Atomic Age dinnerware, Franciscan Starburst combines turquoise aqua and yellow starbursts with fine black radiating lines against warm speckled ivory earthenware. Introduced in 1954 as part of Franciscan’s Modern Americana dinnerware promotion, the futuristic Starburst pattern remained in production into the 1960s and became one of Franciscan’s most recognizable Mid Century Modern designs. This particular bowl carries the later TV-style Franciscan backstamp, placing it within the later 1960s production rather than the earliest 1950s Starburst production.

This is the Franciscan Starburst Coupe Cereal Bowl, measuring approximately 7 1/8 inches across. Its asymmetrical coupe form rises into the characteristic gently upturned point at one side, while scattered aqua turquoise and yellow atomic starbursts give the bowl the unmistakable Space Age appearance sought by Franciscan, MCM dinnerware and vintage California pottery collectors.

Light utensil marks from previous use are visible primarily across the bottom of the interior well. A small glazed factory imperfection is present near the pointed upturned rim. Additional irregularities around the underside near the foot are also glazed over and consistent with manufacturing imperfections rather than later damage. No post-production rim chips or cracks were found. The later Franciscan TV backstamp is clearly visible on the underside.
