Vintage 1950s Modernist Pottery Vase Hand Painted Atomic Abstract Two Handle Mid Century Ceramic

Expressive hand-painted decoration and an unusual sculptural silhouette give this circa 1950s modernist pottery vase terrific period character. The pale pinkish cream glazed earthenware body rises from a flared pedestal foot and is flanked by two large applied loop handles, one on each side. Sweeping black lines loop freely around the vessel and are punctuated by vivid red dots, creating the energetic abstract appearance associated with Atomic Age and Mid Century Modern decorative design.

The combination of oversized handles, tapered body, pedestal base and gestural black-and-red decoration gives the vase strong appeal for collectors of 1950s pottery, Mid Century Modern ceramics, Atomic décor, abstract art pottery, retro interiors and postwar modernist design. The exposed underside shows a light buff ceramic body and bears an unidentified handwritten mark or production notation. The maker and country of origin have not been established, and no unsupported attribution is being made.

The vase stands approximately 6 inches tall with a 3 1/4-inch rim diameter. There are no chips or cracks. As shown in the photographs, areas of the dark painted decoration appear smeared or transferred across portions of the glazed surface and do not come away with cleaning.
