Strong architectural geometry, dramatic glaze contrast and an unusual chapter in Van Briggle history come together in this vintage Van Briggle Pottery Anna Line pitcher. Produced circa 1954–1956 by Dryden Pottery in Ellsworth, Kansas for Van Briggle, the piece dates to the formative years of the Anna Line, when Dryden’s modern forms and high-gloss glaze techniques introduced a distinctly Mid Century Modern direction to pottery traditionally associated with matte Art Nouveau wares. The tall cylindrical body, sharply projecting spout and squared rectangular handle create a sculptural silhouette with exceptional period presence.

A deep glossy chocolate brown glaze covers the body and handle, contrasting dramatically with the textured ivory and cream glaze surrounding the irregular rim and elongated pouring spout. Subtle tan and muted greenish tones appear within the lighter glaze where it varies during firing. Viewed from different angles, the asymmetrical opening, angular handle and pronounced spout give the pitcher an architectural quality, making it equally compelling as American art pottery and as a decorative object for a Mid Century Modern interior.

The pitcher stands approximately 11 inches tall and is hand-inscribed “Anna Van Briggle / Colo. Spgs.” on the underside. Despite the Colorado Springs inscription, this early Anna Line production was made at the Dryden facility in Ellsworth, Kansas during the period following Van Briggle’s acquisition of Dryden in 1954 and before production was transferred to Colorado Springs in 1956. The pitcher remains in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs found. Two tiny kiln pores are present near the handle, along with extremely light localized crazing visible upon close inspection. Please review the photographs closely as part of the condition description.
