Vintage Anna Van Briggle Mid Century Modern Pitcher 1954-1968 Brown Ivory Drip Glaze Colorado Art Pottery

Striking architectural geometry and dramatic glaze contrast distinguish this vintage Anna Van Briggle pitcher, part of Van Briggle Pottery's distinctive postwar high-gloss line produced from 1954 through 1968. Created during a fascinating departure from the matte Art Nouveau pottery for which Van Briggle is best known, the Anna line embraced glossy finishes and increasingly modern forms that reflected changing American design tastes of the 1950s and 1960s.

Standing approximately 11 inches tall, this substantial pitcher has an unusually strong Mid Century Modern profile. A tall cylindrical body rises almost vertically to a sharply projecting integrated pouring spout, while the squared rectangular handle reinforces the clean architectural geometry. The rich glossy chocolate-to-honey brown glaze is capped by a contrasting textured ivory and cream drip glaze that flows irregularly around the rim and spout, with subtle warm tan and greenish tonal variation created during firing. Viewed from above, the elongated spout and angular handle give the vessel an especially sculptural presence.

The underside is hand-inscribed “Anna Van Briggle / Colo. Spgs,” identifying it with Van Briggle's special Anna high-gloss production. The Anna line originated in the mid-1950s through Van Briggle's relationship with Dryden Pottery and employed a different clay and glaze system from the company's traditional matte pottery; Van Briggle subsequently continued Anna production in Colorado Springs until the line ended in 1968. These glossy wares form a distinctive chapter in Van Briggle history and are readily recognizable beside the pottery's traditional matte-glazed work.

This pitcher remains in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs found. Two tiny kiln pores are present near the handle when the spout faces right, along with extremely light localized crazing detectable upon close inspection. These minor manufacturing and age-related characteristics do not detract from its impressive display.

With its large scale, strongly geometric silhouette, hand-inscribed Anna Van Briggle marking and dramatic brown-and-ivory high-gloss glaze treatment, this pitcher has appeal well beyond traditional Van Briggle collecting. It is an especially strong piece for collectors of Mid Century Modern pottery, 1950s and 1960s ceramics, Colorado art pottery, American modernist design and vintage architectural decor.
