Vintage 1950s Surrealist Modernist Jeweled Clip Earrings Brown Molded Plastic Rhinestone Mosaic

Extraordinary detail and an almost Surrealist sculptural quality make these vintage mid-century clip earrings far more intriguing than they first appear. Formed in thick brown molded plastic with warm amber undertones that become more apparent in direct light, likely Lucite or a similar period plastic, each earring has an irregular biomorphic silhouette surrounding a deeply recessed center filled with an intricate assemblage of sparkling stones and tiny colorful accents.

Four brilliant amber-orange faceted rhinestones form the focal points within each earring, individually surrounded by halos of tiny clear stones. Tucked throughout the composition are minute round accents in robin's-egg blue, creamy white, copper-orange and metallic gold tones. The deliberately varied placement creates an unusually rich mosaic-like effect, with new details becoming visible as the earrings are viewed from different angles.

The recessed border adds another layer of decoration, combining a textured gold-tone surface with individually spaced clear rhinestones. The smooth, substantial outer bodies curve around these densely embellished interiors, creating remarkable depth and giving the earrings an almost miniature sculptural or jeweled-object quality rather than the appearance of conventional flat rhinestone earrings.
