Vintage 1938 Red Wing Pottery #763 Belle Kogan Opalescent Green Urn Vase Double Handle Art Deco American Art Pottery

A wonderfully imperfect survivor from one of Red Wing Pottery's important early designer collaborations, this #763 double-handled urn vase was created by industrial designer Belle Kogan for her first Red Wing series, introduced circa 1938. The sculptural neoclassical form combines a deeply ribbed rounded body, pedestal foot and squared base with distinctive handles terminating in opposing ram heads. Finished in Red Wing's subtle Opalescent Green glaze with a warm Suntan interior, the color can shift considerably with the light, appearing pale celadon green in natural sunlight and more muted gray-green under indoor lighting.

This particular #763 has something considerably more personality than factory symmetry: it leans. The body and rim are visibly out of true, with a noticeable slope and irregularity to the rim that appear consistent with factory production or firing distortion rather than later damage. For collectors who appreciate the quirks of vintage American pottery manufacture, it makes this already distinctive Belle Kogan design an especially memorable example. The underside is molded “RED WING USA 763,” confirming the form and maker.

The vase stands approximately 7 inches tall at its highest point with a rim measuring approximately 5 3/8 inches across, although the irregular rim makes the measurement approximate. A drainage hole through the interior also allows the piece to function beautifully as a vintage planter or cachepot.
