Vintage Mexican Sterling Silver Necklace Saltillo COA 1940s Modernist Articulated Collar Choker Black Stone Inlay Serape Pictorial Hallmark Hecho en Mexico 114 Gram
$525.00
This exceptional vintage Mexican sterling silver collar necklace is a substantial 114-gram example of early Mexican Modernist jewelry, dating approximately to the late 1930s–1940s. Individually articulated overlapping sterling links create a bold sculptural design, each accented with a fitted diagonal section of polished black stone inlay. At just 12 inches long, the necklace is designed to sit closely at the neckline as a dramatic fitted collar or choker.
The necklace carries an especially distinctive regional mark reading HECHO EN MEXICO / SALTILLO COA / STERLING, identifying Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. At the center of the stamp is an unusual pictorial hallmark resembling a traditional fringed Saltillo serape with a stylized geometric device at its center. The workshop associated with this serape pictorial hallmark has not been conclusively identified, so no unsupported maker attribution is being made. The SALTILLO COA mark is particularly noteworthy for collectors of regional Mexican silver outside the better-known Taxco tradition.
Measuring approximately 12 inches long and weighing an impressive 114 grams, this substantial sterling silver choker has the weight and presence associated with collectible early Mexican silver jewelry. Its articulated construction allows the overlapping sculptural links to move around the neckline while maintaining the dramatic geometric silver-and-black composition. An unusual find for collectors of vintage Mexican sterling silver, regional Mexican jewelry, pre-eagle Mexican silver, Mexican Modernist design and bold sculptural statement jewelry. The dark inserts appear to be genuine polished stone; because the specific material has not been independently identified, they are conservatively described as black stone rather than attributed as onyx. Small edge chips are visible on portions of the stone inlay, along with age-related patina and wear consistent with vintage jewelry. Please review all photographs, including the hallmark and close-up images, as part of the description.
