Vintage Early Metlox Poppytrail California Provincial Rooster Rim Soup Bowl 8.5 Inch 1950s 1960s Hand Painted California Pottery

An especially appealing earlier-production example of Metlox Poppytrail's beloved California Provincial pattern, this vintage rim soup bowl features the deeper, richer color palette associated with the pattern's early years. Against the characteristic warm speckled cream ground, the wonderfully animated rooster is rendered in dark forest green, deep burgundy and golden mustard yellow, surrounded by a wavy green border and burgundy dots. These darker colors distinguish the earlier appearance from later California Provincial production, which can show noticeably brighter red and lighter coloration. Introduced during the postwar era and produced for decades, California Provincial became one of Metlox's most recognizable California dinnerware designs.

Measuring approximately 8 1/2 inches in diameter and 1 1/2 inches tall, this is the rim soup bowl form. The underside carries the fuller pattern-specific “California Provincial” Poppytrail by Metlox backstamp associated with vintage production. Based on the dark original-style burgundy and green palette together with the backstamp, this example is conservatively dated to circa 1950s–1960s. Its combination of early coloration and classic rooster imagery makes it especially appealing to collectors of Metlox, Poppytrail, Vernonware, vintage California pottery, rooster kitchenware, retro farmhouse decor and Mid Century dinnerware.

The bowl retains strong, vivid decoration with no crazing observed. The cream-colored glaze has the characteristic fine speckling of the California Provincial pattern. One small chip is present along the rim and is shown closely in the photographs; otherwise the bowl presents beautifully for its age.
