$14.95
Small in size but rich in American mercantile history, this antique Federal Glass miniature mug represents the type of pressed glass vessel widely known to collectors as a "Penny Candy" mug. Produced by Federal Glass Company of Columbus, Ohio, and illustrated in the company's early twentieth-century Packers' Catalogues, these compact mugs were supplied for commercial packers and became closely associated with the neighborhood general stores and confectioneries where they were commonly used to scoop penny candy from large countertop jars. After their original contents were gone, many found second lives as toy mugs, small whiskey measures, condiment cups, or children's tableware, making surviving examples increasingly collectible today.
This example displays a beautifully molded textured leaf border beneath the rim, deeply pressed stippled vertical panels, and a crisply formed octagonal collar that catches light from every angle. The substantial handle and heavy pressed construction reflect the quality for which Federal Glass became known during its early years. Measuring approximately 1¾ inches tall with an opening of about 1¾ inches, it is an appealing miniature that fits equally well into collections of Early American pressed glass, Federal Glass, Ohio glasshouses, country store memorabilia, penny candy advertising, packers' goods, or antique toy tableware.
The mug remains in very good condition overall with only one fleabite found and pictured for your assessment. A scratch was seen almost opposite the flea bite and is also pictured. Bubbles and some inclusions to the glass were visible and are common. The clear glass retains outstanding clarity, sharp molded detail, and an attractive glossy finish that highlights the intricate leaf decoration and geometric paneling. Whether displayed alongside antique country store advertising, miniature glassware, or an Early American pressed glass collection, this authentic Federal Glass Penny Candy mug offers an engaging connection to the everyday commerce of the early twentieth century.
