Designed by Don Schreckengost for the Homer Laughlin China Company, Rhythm is a classic of postwar American dinnerware design, developed in 1950 and placed into production in September of that year. This vintage Rhythm gravy boat, also referred to by Homer Laughlin collectors as a sauceboat, displays the line's wonderfully streamlined hollowware styling with a deep rounded body, small foot, dramatically extended pouring spout and distinctive oversized loop handle. Rhythm was produced in five solid colors including chartreuse, making the brilliant yellow-green glaze especially evocative of early 1950s Mid Century Modern tableware.
This example is particularly eye-catching because the glossy chartreuse green surface is densely scattered with fine dark flecking, giving the glaze a lively speckled appearance. Although the underside is unmarked, comparison with documented Rhythm hollowware—including the characteristic creamer design—supports identification with the Homer Laughlin Rhythm shape. The piece measures approximately 7¾ inches from handle to spout, 4¼ inches across the sides and 3¼ inches tall. Its sculptural proportions and saturated period color make it appealing not only to Homer Laughlin and Rhythm collectors but also to buyers of Don Schreckengost design, 1950s dinnerware, Mid Century Modern ceramics, Atomic Age tableware and retro kitchen décor. Homer Laughlin's Rhythm line is documented as having included both creamers and a sauceboat in its original assortment.
No chips, cracks or crazing were found. Light utensil marks are visible inside from previous use, with no other issues noted. The glossy chartreuse glaze presents beautifully, including the characteristic dark speckling seen throughout this example. A striking piece of American Mid Century design combining Homer Laughlin's collectible Rhythm form, Don Schreckengost styling and one of the era's quintessential 1950s colors.
