$129.00
Dramatic asymmetrical form and a luminous chartreuse glaze make this vintage Gonder Pottery vase an exceptional example of mid-century American art pottery. Produced by Gonder Ceramic Arts of Zanesville, Ohio, the vase combines a tall flaring trumpet form with sweeping dimensional scrollwork and a distinctive four-footed pedestal base. Its strong organic curves and architectural silhouette give it remarkable presence from every angle, appealing equally to collectors of Gonder, Zanesville pottery, Mid Century Modern ceramics and sculptural American art pottery.
The richly variegated glaze is one of the vase's most compelling features. Glossy chartreuse green shifts through olive, golden yellow and warm brown tones as the glaze moves across the molded contours and settles into the recessed areas. The photographs under controlled lighting emphasize some of the warmer yellow tones; in person, the overall color reads as a richer chartreuse green. The deeply modeled scrolls, dramatically swept rim and broad curving surfaces create changing highlights and shadows that emphasize the unusual three-dimensional form.
The vase measures approximately 7 inches tall, 7 inches across at its widest point and 4 inches deep. The underside bears the original Gonder mark. Careful inspection found no chips, cracks, repairs or crazing, leaving this unusually elaborate vintage vase in excellent condition. The unglazed foot rims show only light, age-appropriate shelf wear, and a subtle variation in the glaze near the rim appears consistent with the original firing rather than later damage.
With its vivid period color, unusual biomorphic silhouette and excellent preservation, this is considerably more than a functional flower vase. It displays beautifully on its own as a piece of vintage ceramic sculpture and has strong crossover appeal for collectors of Gonder Pottery, Zanesville Ohio ceramics, 1950s American pottery, Mid Century Modern décor, chartreuse pottery, organic modern design and distinctive vintage art pottery.
