Vintage Japanese Cloisonné Enamel Vase Turquoise Rose Floral Early 20th Century

A luminous turquoise ground and beautifully naturalistic roses distinguish this vintage Japanese cloisonné enamel vase, likely dating to the early 20th century. The graceful baluster form is decorated with a large pink and creamy white rose surrounded by deep green foliage, thorned brown stems, rosebuds and additional blossoms. Particularly fine detailing gives the floral decoration an almost hand-painted, watercolor-like appearance, a characteristic possible in Japanese enamel work employing exceptionally delicate wire and refined decorative techniques.

Especially striking are the narrow cobalt blue geometric borders encircling both the neck and base, enriched with fine gold-colored linear detailing. Separate metal rims finish the mouth and foot, while the interior is completely enameled in a contrasting deep green. Magnet testing produces no attraction across the enameled body, consistent with a non-ferrous metal substrate such as copper or brass, while the applied upper and lower metal rims show slight magnetic attraction. These construction characteristics, together with the turquoise ground, floral treatment, fine border work and contrasting interior enamel, are consistent with Japanese cloisonné and related enamel production of the late Meiji through early Showa periods. The vase is unmarked, so no specific workshop or maker such as Ando is attributed.

Measures approximately 7 1/16 inches tall with a 2 3/8-inch diameter top rim. The vase displays beautifully, with age-related toning and wear to the exposed metal rims and light scattered surface wear consistent with its vintage history, as shown.
