Striking color, geometric texture and an unusual translucent material distinguish this signed Sascha Brastoff resin vessel dating to approximately 1960. Better known for his celebrated ceramic work, Brastoff also produced a distinctive series of molded resin decorative objects during the mid-century period, and documented examples of this design are described as both candleholders and vases. Examples from the series are known in several colors and forms, including green, teal, red and yellow.
This substantial example is molded in richly translucent avocado to olive green resin, with light dramatically changing its appearance from deep forest green to brilliant chartreuse. Each side is decorated with a repeating geometric pattern of sharply faceted diamonds rising into elongated pointed forms. The deeply molded surfaces refract light through the colored resin, giving the piece an almost jewel-like quality while its strong rectangular silhouette places it firmly within the vocabulary of 1960s Mid Century Modern design.
The vessel measures approximately 5½ inches tall, 6 inches across the longer side and 4⅝ inches across the shorter side. A circular recessed opening at the top allows it to function as a candleholder or small vase, while its substantial geometric form makes it equally effective displayed simply as a sculptural decorative object. The underside bears the incised Sascha Brastoff signature visible in the photographs.
The photographs show surface wear and scratching, particularly to the flat upper and lower surfaces, consistent with age and previous use. The resin itself also contains the small bubbles and textural irregularities visible under close inspection. One very small nick was seen at the base on one corner and shown for your assessment.
An unusual addition for collectors of Sascha Brastoff, Mid Century Modern décor, vintage resin art, 1960s decorative objects, geometric design and American modernist accessories, this piece has especially strong display presence when positioned where natural or artificial light can illuminate the translucent green resin.
