Vintage Jameson's of Capistrano California Art Pottery Vase 1950s Mid Century Modern Sculptural Ceramic

Distinctive sculptural form and an unusually expressive glaze make this vintage Jameson's of Capistrano vase a striking example of mid-century California art pottery. Dating to approximately the late 1940s–1950s, the substantial vessel has a softly squared, rounded form accented on the front by a sweeping raised organic motif resembling a stylized leaf or flame. Its asymmetrical relief gives the vase considerably more dimension than a simple molded vessel and strongly reflects the experimental decorative vocabulary of postwar California ceramics.

The glaze is particularly unusual. A creamy ivory ground is covered with dense burgundy-red mottling and irregular washes and vertical passages of green, producing an almost textured, bark-like appearance despite the glossy surface. The colors continue around the vessel and into the interior, while glaze pooling around the raised front decoration emphasizes its sculptural contours. The vase measures approximately 6.75 inches tall, with a substantial 6.75 by 4 inch base and an approximately 4.5 by 2.75 inch opening. The underside has three broad unglazed raised feet that expose the light cream-colored ceramic body. A small cream-colored area visible along the lower front edge is a factory glaze skip rather than a chip; close photographs are included so its nature and condition can be clearly examined. The piece presents very well overall, with no chips, cracks or repairs noted.
