Vintage Mid Century Bowling Ball and Pins Ceramic Planter Black Yellow Bowling Alley Sports Kitsch Novelty Pottery

A wonderfully unusual piece of Mid Century bowling memorabilia, this vintage ceramic planter captures the instant of impact as a glossy black bowling ball crashes into a group of bright yellow pins. The exaggerated spherical ball, dimensional finger holes and wildly angled pins give the piece a fantastic sense of movement, while the dramatic black, yellow and muted neutral glaze combination delivers exactly the playful visual character associated with 1950s and 1960s novelty ceramics. The planter opening is incorporated directly into the upper portion of the bowling ball, making the design almost sculptural when displayed empty.

Measuring approximately 7 inches long by 4 inches deep, this substantial little planter would be equally appealing to collectors of vintage bowling memorabilia, Mid Century pottery, retro sports decor, novelty ceramics and classic American kitsch. The underside bears an unusual hand-incised “BLACK ROSE” mark with what appears to read “HIVOL KS” beneath it. I have not found documentation connecting the inscription with an established commercial pottery, so it is presented as a studio or maker mark rather than a manufacturer attribution. Commercial ceramic molds for bowling-ball-and-pin forms were produced during the vintage period, making small-studio production a strong possibility.

The planter displays beautifully with its glossy black ball and vivid yellow pins. Age-related crazing is visible, particularly to the lighter glazed areas and underside, along with scattered glaze and surface irregularities consistent with vintage ceramic production and use.
