A remarkable example of French Art Deco design inspired by the sea, this rare dress clip is attributed to the celebrated Jean Painlevé JHP design line introduced in Paris in 1936 following the success of Painlevé's groundbreaking film L'Hippocampe. Featuring two beautifully sculpted mirrored hippocampi gracefully arranged in a balanced Art Deco composition, the design reflects the marine imagery that became one of the most distinctive themes of the JHP workshop. While this example is not signed JHP, it is marked "Made in France" on the reverse and closely matches documented examples from the Painlevé design family in both construction and motif, making it an outstanding collector's example of this influential French decorative arts movement.
The paired gold-tone seahorses are mounted against a beautifully marbled opaque Bakelite plaque displaying rich flowing shades of warm pumpkin orange, creamy butterscotch, honey, caramel, and soft tan veining that create exceptional depth and movement throughout the piece.
