An extraordinary piece of wearable art, this oversized 7-inch kinetic brooch transforms handmade studio jewelry into moving sculpture. The abstract insect or arthropod form is built around a dark wire armature supporting individually formed silver elements that swing and shift independently as the wearer moves. The articulated construction, dramatic scale, exposed framework and sculptural use of negative space give the piece a striking modernist character and remarkable sense of life and movement.

Completely unmarked, the brooch appears individually hand fabricated rather than commercially manufactured. The moving silver components were touchstone tested side by side with a known marked sterling control and produced the same bright blue reaction using 18K testing acid, consistent with high-silver content/sterling; these components are also nonmagnetic. The dark structural wire is magnetic and is not sterling. The head is articulated as well, although its movement is more limited than the freely moving body elements.
