Vintage 1930s Japanese Art Deco Triple Bud Vase Yellow Ringware Machine Age Ceramic Made in Japan Pottery

Striking geometric form and rhythmic horizontal rings give this vintage Japanese triple bud vase exceptional Art Deco and Machine Age presence. Dating approximately to the 1930s–early 1940s, this unusual prewar Japanese export pottery piece features three graduated cylindrical flower holders joined together on a single circular base, creating a dramatic architectural composition that changes considerably depending on the viewing angle.

Each vessel is completely encircled by closely spaced raised horizontal rings, producing the distinctive ribbed or ringware appearance seen throughout the piece. The graduated heights and asymmetrical three-part arrangement give the vase a particularly strong period-modern design, while the glossy yellow glaze adds the bright decorative color associated with many Art Deco interiors. Fine overall crazing is visible in the glaze, consistent with the age of the ceramic and adding characteristic vintage surface texture.

The underside bears a hand-applied “Made in Japan” mark. Although no individual manufacturer has been identified, the marking and construction are consistent with Japanese ceramics produced for the export market. Its combination of geometric form, repetitive ribbed decoration and functional three-vessel construction makes this a particularly appealing example of vintage Japanese decorative pottery with strong Art Deco and Machine Age styling.

The vase measures approximately 6 inches tall. As shown in the photographs, there is a glazed-over production chip or irregularity along one of the raised rings on the tallest vessel, indicating that this occurred during manufacture rather than as later damage. There are also several small flea-bite chips along the underside/base rim. Fine glaze crazing is present throughout. With its unusual triple bud vase configuration, sunny yellow glaze and strongly architectural silhouette, this piece displays beautifully even without flowers. One other thing: I particularly like that the new photographs show the interior. That overhead image is useful because it demonstrates that these are three actual, separately formed vase openings—not merely a decorative exterior treatment—and shows just how extensively the ribbing continues down inside them. That makes the construction much clearer to a buyer than the old listing probably did.
