Antique Hand Carved Wooden Wise Man Folk Art Sculpture Church Nativity Three Kings Magi Figure 20½ Inch

Richly carved, wonderfully timeworn, and filled with authentic history, this impressive hand-carved wooden Wise Man is a striking example of early 20th-century religious folk art. Depicting one of the Three Kings bearing gifts, the figure features expressive hand-carved facial details, flowing robes, a gilded crown, and a beautifully aged hand-painted finish that reflects decades of faithful use in a church Christmas Nativity display. My late uncle rescued this figure during the demolition of a South Omaha church in the 1970s, preserving it from being discarded after many years of seasonal display. Although the church can no longer be identified with certainty, the figure's church provenance has remained with it through our family ever since. The carving is believed to date to the early 20th century and exhibits the honest character expected of a devotional figure that was cared for and repainted over many years by members of its congregation. Standing approximately 20½ inches tall and weighing about 3½ pounds, it has a substantial presence that immediately commands attention. Condition is consistent with its long history of church use, including age-related paint wear, scattered paint losses, surface abrasions, old shrinkage cracks to the wood, and evidence of multiple generations of repainting that have become part of its story and charm. Whether displayed as part of a Christmas Nativity, within a collection of antique religious folk art, or as a distinctive piece of historic church décor, this remarkable sculpture possesses the warmth, craftsmanship, and history that only an authentic church-used carving can offer.
