$48.95
Victorian elegance meets classic American glassmaking in this antique Tarentum Glass Company No. 240 toothpick holder, a handsome example of Early American Pattern Glass dating to the closing years of the nineteenth century. Rather than carrying a collector nickname, this pattern is identified in period references simply by its factory pattern number, making correctly identified examples especially appealing to EAPG collectors. Crisp vertical panels rise to a beautifully scalloped rim, while fanburst motifs at the base catch and reflect light from every angle. Although much of the original gilt decoration has worn away through more than a century of careful use, traces remain to illustrate the decorative finish originally applied to this elegant Victorian table accessory.
Standing approximately 2½ inches tall, this toothpick holder displays beautifully whether incorporated into an Early American Pattern Glass collection, a Victorian dining display, or a curated grouping of antique tableware. The clear pressed glass retains excellent clarity with sharp molded detail throughout, allowing the architectural form and fan motifs to remain the focal point despite the expected wear to the gilding.
No chips or cracks were found. The principal condition note is the expected loss of most of the original gilt decoration, with small areas of gold still visible around portions of the rim and pattern. As with all antique glass, photographs form part of the description and should be reviewed carefully. An increasingly difficult form to locate in this condition, this original Tarentum No. 240 toothpick holder offers outstanding appeal for collectors of Victorian pressed glass, Tarentum Glass, Pennsylvania glass, antique table accessories, and nineteenth-century American decorative arts.
