More than an official game program, this original November 14, 1964 Michigan Wolverines versus Iowa Hawkeyes football program is a remarkable time capsule of Big Ten football, mid-century Americana, and vintage advertising. Produced for one of college football's classic conference rivalries, the 54-page publication captures the excitement of the era while preserving an extraordinary collection of period illustrations, photography, local Iowa City advertising, and colorful national advertising that extends its appeal far beyond sports memorabilia.
The program measures approximately 10 5/8 inches by 7 3/4 inches and contains 54 pages plus the front and back covers. Inside are complete player rosters and biographies for both the University of Michigan Wolverines and University of Iowa Hawkeyes, along with full coaching staff biographies for both teams, season statistics, historical Michigan-Iowa series information, Big Ten and NCAA features, game-day information, humorous illustrated football cartoons, numerous photographs, and a full-page illustrated "Common Penalties According to Signals" referee guide that remains one of the publication's most enjoyable period features.
The advertising alone makes this an outstanding piece of 1960s ephemera. Throughout the program are original advertisements for the 1965 Dodge Coronet, Plymouth automobiles, Buick, Volkswagen, Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Tiparillo Cigars, Ozark Air Lines, Maytag, Hy-Vee, Longines watches, WHO Radio, KRNT Radio & Television, the American Dairy Association, and numerous Iowa City businesses, restaurants, retailers, and service companies. Together they create a fascinating snapshot of Midwestern life and American consumer culture during the fall of 1964. The program also features numerous players who later reached professional football, including future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Tom Mack, NFL stars Rick Volk, Bob Timberlake, John Henderson, Mike Bass, Frank Nunley, Bill Laskey, and Iowa All-American Karl Noonan, adding another level of historical significance for football collectors.
Condition is good vintage overall. The covers show tears, creasing, edge wear, and areas of age-related discoloration. The centerfold has become loose and remains attached by a single staple. Several interior pages show discoloration consistent with age and handling, but the program remains complete, fully readable, and highly displayable. These condition issues have been reflected in the pricing.
This program comes from my family's long-preserved collection and is an outstanding collectible for University of Michigan and University of Iowa alumni, Wolverines and Hawkeyes fans, Big Ten collectors, vintage football enthusiasts, sports historians, advertising collectors, Iowa City history collectors, and anyone interested in authentic mid-century American graphic design and commercial ephemera.
