Original 1922 University of Iowa Diamond Jubilee publication documenting one of the institution's landmark celebratory performances, The Land of the Aiouwas: A Masque by Edwin Ford Piper. Published by The Midland Press of Iowa City specifically for the University's Diamond Jubilee celebration held February 24–25, 1922, this scarce softcover volume represents an important piece of early American collegiate theater, Iowa history, and university ephemera. Unlike later commemorative publications, this is the original 1922 printing issued for the actual performance.

Piper, a longtime University of Iowa professor, created the masque as an ambitious historical pageant celebrating Iowa's landscape, Native heritage, early exploration, settlement, and educational ideals. Productions of this scale were hallmarks of American universities during the early twentieth century, combining drama, music, poetry, and pageantry into elaborate public celebrations. Surviving original publications from these performances are increasingly difficult to locate, particularly in complete condition.

This copy retains its original soft paper covers and measures approximately 8 5/8 by 5 1/2 inches. The deckled-edge pages remain exceptionally clean, and several leaves are still unopened along the top edge, preserving an original feature of the book's manufacture. A number of pages were historically opened by hand, leaving the expected uneven upper edges rather than machine-cut edges. Later pages show a few small folded lower corners, and the covers display light edge wear, small corner creases, and a short separation at the upper spine consistent with careful handling over the past century. The booklet remains complete, firmly bound, and entirely readable.

This copy comes from my maternal grandmother's family collection and has remained preserved for generations. It offers outstanding appeal for collectors of University of Iowa history, Iowa City publications, early twentieth-century theater, American pageants and masques, Midwest regional history, academic ephemera, and original college memorabilia. It is an increasingly scarce survivor from one of the University of Iowa's most significant early commemorative celebrations.
